300TE Flex Disc - space between flex disc and trans yoke?

A friend has a 1988 300TE with 165k and a few weeks ago he was trying to back up, heard a bang and the car wouldnt move anymore. Wound up the front flex disc had separated big time. I got my tools today and went over there, jacked the car up and removed the trans support. The thing is, there is almost a 1" gap now between where the disc is, and where it bolts to the transmission output yoke. The output shaft looked cleaner closer to the yoke, was the yoke forced forward into the transmission and now needs to be pulled back? Or does the middle driveshaft collapse rearward somewhat? The center bearing support looks fine.

I'll post a pic later, trying to get the car to drive again, its not in the best shape (rather poorly maintained) but its still a reliable car. Its not worth much so it might get scrapped if we cant get it working, but it'd be a shame.
