Replacing FAN CLUTCH on 87 300E ... Advice please.

i plan on buying a new fan clutch for my car because it tends to overheat slightly when in traffic (i assume it's the fan clutch) ... the part is about 144.00 ... is there a complex process to replacing it, or could i perhaps do it myself with some proper tools ? Advice please.

Before you do that...

Did you change the thermostat? It is often the culprit. Also, is you A/C working fine? Is your auxiliary fan working?

I had the clutch replaced and it solved the problem running the car in hot summer at low speed or even sitting in a traffic jam. The temp. gauge slowly raises until the A/C fans kick in. The fluid coupling can easily replaced. What you need is a 5 or 6 mm allen wrench to loosen the centre screw of the clutch, and you need a 6 mm "hook" to hold the clutch tight for loosening the centre screw. The "hook" is a 90 degree bent 6mm steel rod about 8-10 inch long. The bent part is about 0.5 inch and goes into the grove you'll find on the outer circumference of the clutch. Then you take the fan off (if the replacement has no fan on it) and put it all back. For a DIY it takes about 30 min.

30min after you've done it once,
Make sure you have that tool ready with the right diameter rod. I dropped an allen wrench into the belt/pulleys so use a long enough tool. You have to rotate the fan to align the hole to the groove where the tool holds it. You may need a pipe over the allen wrench to break loose the bolt. Remove the fan guard, then fan from the clutch. Don't forget to position the fan guard before replacing the fan. Unless you remove the radiator, you will not be able to get a torque wrench in there. I worry the hand tightening is enough...
