OBD vs OBD2

Can anyone explain the difference in terms of sensors/physical differences when it comes to the M104 - 3.2L engine and the 2 versions of the ecu's. Obviously the ecu is different, but what else?
Is it possible to adapt OBD2 components from a w210 - 3.2L (96-97) engine to our cars. Since the OBD2 ecu can be reflashed and perhaps more tuner friendly, it could a nice project for getting some more power.

Beginning in 96, ECU's become "married" to the vehicle they are installed in after 40 starts. Anyone purchasing a used ECU is purchasing a paper weight!
