WHAT REAL CAUSES OF MISFIRE IN 124?

Hi all
I own a 1992 Mercedes 200E 124. It has been having problems with misfires for over a year now. I have tried different mechanicss but none has given a permanent solution. DT Dobie tells me they don’t handle old models. I have changed plugs several times and the distributor cap, but after a few days it comes back. I started visiting different websites to search for solutions. I have compiled a long list of what people say are possible causes/ solutions of misfires, though I wonder if the list is exhaustive or everything is relevant. Here is the list:
  • Mass Air Flow
  • Electronic Control Unit (ECU)
  • Manifold pressure sensor
  • Airflow sensor
  • Cam position sensor
  • Engine wiring harness
  • Cross over pipes (false air)
  • Valve for recirculation of gases
  • Fuel pump relay
  • Temperature sender
  • Cold start valve
  • Rotor arm
  • Intake manifold gasket leak
  • Earth wires for: Temperature sender, cold start valve and KE-Jetronic
  • Area under the temperature sender and under the air cleaner (If dirty)
  • The vacuum system

My questions are:
  • If all these cause misfires, which ones are the real culprits?
  • Are there any other possible causes?
  • Is it possible to change the fuel injection of the 124 to a less problematic one?
  • Can the 124s like mine be diagnosed by computer?

Thanks

W124 had various series of engines M102, M103, M104, M111, M119 etc. Your 200E should have M102.963 with KE-Jetronic fuel injection, so you need to list out possible cause of missfire for this engine and evaluate each cause one by one.

You need to elaborate on what misfire in your case is, is it rough idle?.

You should be able to read codes(diagnosed by computer).

Those were some of the possible causes I was able to gather, are there some other causes? I am asking because I dont want the mechanics telling me all the lies, need to cover myself from every angle

Yes the missfire is rough idle, and the car looses power and engine stops.

I will check the code, thanks alot
