400E vs 500E differences

I just bought a 92 400E. The M119 engine is a wonder. The 5 liter version is in the 500E. I see there is a 6 liter version of the same engine. The switch should be pretty straightforward.

What else is different between the 400E and 500E besides 8 tenths of a liter and sheetmetal? My 400E would be a true hillbilly rat rod with a 6 liter M119.

Greg

What's the difference? A few hundred parts, actually. For your project though, there wouldn't be a lot of work involved to put in another M119 AFAIK.

I was wondering about suspension and handling. I tried to find Bilsteins for it and couldn't. I ended up with Boge, which are a far cry from Bilsteins. Did I mention that I'm not impressed? I want my Bilsteins back.

I'm thinking about getting a 400E/E420 myself...How well do these cars handle? I have a 540i right now and I dare say it handled as good maybe even better then my W210 E55.

My 420 handles great, very tight on off ramps and around corners. There is one road i travel on every day and night going to and from work that i literally have too much fun on. Its a stretch of about a mile and half of smooth asphault with perfect curves

The only thing im going to change in the front are springs. Not because they arent any good but because i dont like the stance. My front end seems a little too high, but the rear is perfect.

I liked the way my 300E handled better. It felt more agile. I've gotten two tickets in two weeks with the 400. So much for picking on Mustangs.

I'm looking at a few 400/420's. I found a decent 92 400E for 2250, there are a bunch. What is a good year overall?

92 vs 93 400E

The book says the 93 has 7 more horsepower and a little better gas mileage. Apparently the software is a little different. I'm haven't been able to find out just what that difference is yet.

The manual is amazing.

More than just software, the '93 has 11.0:1 compression vs 10.0:1 for the '92. At this point in the cars' lives, there may not be a lot of difference. As long as the car has been properly maintained, you'll be happy. My '93 has 148,000 miles, runs like a top, doesn't use a drop of oil and averages 21 to 22 mpg as my daily driver.

I think that Mercedes also switched from hot wire to hot film. Or the other way around.

In 1993 Mercedes with the M104 motor switched from CIS to HFM, but the 400e/E420 used LH from 92-95

wider wheel wells to accommodate a wider track, a Porsche tuned suspension and chassis and steering, Hydropneumatic self levelling suspension in the rear...the list goes on and on especially if you get in-depth technical.

My '93 has about 160k miles and runs great too...I think all it will need is a water pump soon and the flex discs replaced, but that's not much to add to it considering I got it for $1500.
