Dude. Chris. You have a sweet car that you've but lots of love (and money) into. Don't measure it's value by KBB. It's worth more than that to you and the open market.
The head gasket may cost you $1k-$2k. But think about how much a new(er) car is going to cost you in depreciation. Plus, if you still have the modding bug when you get your new car, you're going to spend a bunch of money getting it the way you like it.

'92 300e
hey, i just bought a '92 300e white with carmel interior for $1000 for my first car. does anyone know how much amg-style 5 spoke rims cost, and would european style headlights look good on a 300e, also if you have any ideas to make this car go faster or look better please let me know cuz im not a big fan of the stock 300e look

2) Euro style headlights, try K-MAC for replicas, would look great on your car - the number one upgrade.
3) Your car cannot be made to go faster, short of a very expensive turbo or supercharger.
4) An MB V8 will not fit in your car - UNLESS you "Hammer" out the transmission tunnel and firewall, among other change$$$

What makes a 500E.
Fenders. Engine. Body bracing. 4 seats. Slightly different suspension. "Porsche built" cachet.
Put that motor in your car and all that other stuff wont really matter.
Not to me anyway. I don't buy cars for their exclusivity.

I have to come out of hiding on this one. Dude, you need to find a nice Black 90-93 300CE and change over the body kit, except for the side skirts. You already have the parts to do the updated 300ce and I don't think the 420 is worth keeping. My car ended up in the junkyard as of 3 weeks ago, once i got the w202. I rather put some money into my 202 and have a car i don't have to worry about. Either that, or you can go to a w210 or w211, but after having a nightmare with a 00 e430 i will never buy a v6 v8 mercedes.
I stripped the crap out of my car and raced it to the junk yard... I almost shed a tear but at some point we gotta let go....
