1990 E300...amg? help
Hey I'm new to the merc game, moving from vw! so i need some help. I'm looking at a 1990 E300 "amg"....i know its not the real deal amg. But its got everything and the guy says the engine is stamped with amg also. It's a japan import so I'm just curious whats different from japan specs to euro/north american. I'm going to see it in a day or two, how do i check if the amg kit/parts are true amg. I know the engine and all that is not "hammer" but im just looking for a little info/help/background about japan ones. Any help would be great. THANKS![drive](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/driving.gif)

I don't have answers to your AMG questions, but I just have to say that these cars are timeless. It is a truly beautiful car, 20 years has done nothing to detract from the elegant design.

The car looks pretty clean (exterior anyways). We see that you are here in Greater Vancouver.
Nice looking vehicle.
It is good that it is LHD, I would not recommend a RHD to anyone. With RHD, you have major safety issues like making left turns at busy intersections. Also, ICBC is collecting which vehicles are RHD, and maybe in the future they may ban them.
If you do buy it, let us know what you paid and tell us how many miles or kilometres are on it.
The good is they are great cars, the bad is with high mileage the repair bill can add up. I agree, 20 years on, they are a timeless look.
Welcome.

I saw that car on Vancouver's Craigslist, the seller never emailed me back when I contacted him.
Given that its a 1990 model, there won't be any VIN encoding for any AMG accessories that might of been installed by AMG of Japan. The wheels are not period correct for 1990 and the rear emblem design wasn't in use till 1992. The body kit appears to be correct for that model year, aftermarket body kits are fiberglass, Gen1 and Gen2 authentic AMG body kits are made from a plastic material which is flexible, but I have also seen "copies" that are made from duraflex, which is a flexible material also. AMG part numbers are stamped into each body kit piece, but may not be visible once installed, plus, they could of been filled in before paint.
I emailed the seller and asked for pictures of the engine bay and interior, but again, he/them never replied, so I can't comment further nor am I able to tell you if this is just a regular 300e with some AMG parts on it or an authentic AMG of Japan vehicle. Vehicle sales history helps in this area.
Post pictures of the interior and engine if you can get the seller to provide.

Nice car!
Seller is in New West?
Is he a dealer?
Someone has brought over several of these Japan spec AMG's to Vancouver. There is/ was an Almandine or purple one around town and I occasionally see a 199 Black car, in Burnaby. All look excelent.

Looked to be a reseller, but their website was no longer in use. I believe the ad was in the Vancouver Craigs list, don't remember exactly. It only ran one time, so I figured it was sold. Was listed as having cloth interior, checkered cloth if I remember correctly.

so i bought the car today, its really nice, all amg parts seem to be the real deal, interior is better then mint, drives like a dream, i'll have the car at home on tuesday give it a good buff and ill try to get pics up, the suspension is great and very low, i'll take a wheel off this week and see whats going on. Its got 44 030 kms only so i dont need to worry about high km problems. In the last year its only had 1000km put on it so ill probably get a complete fluid flush to keep it clean. Just gotta sell my jetta and it'll be my daily. And source out some winter tires and wheels.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!![thumbs](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif)
Nice car. Hopefully you'll show it to us at the next GTG.
With low kms. a fluid flush is the best thing you can do. Often these low-milers do not get their oil changed often enough. It should be done by time not mileage. Don't ask me how I know!
Also, be aware, suspension rubber bushings and assorted seals have a tendency to dry up, causing suspension noises, vibration or even sloppy handling. Check rubber driveline Flexdiscs, they dry up and crumble with age.
Hopefully, I'll see you around town.![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)

Your 500 looks great! Thanks for all the info its a big help, I'll check the suspension and driveline this week, is there anything else i should be aware of. Any maintenance that should be done in the next while, things to look for? Major maintenance suggested km's (timing belt ex.) If there is a get together soon i'll be sure to go. Thanks again.

Actually, you should never FLUSH the oil, just drain it - important!
Because of maintenance neglect by PO, my timing chain guides had deteriorated (Bakelite) and I had to have the whole front end done, at only 80,000km!
I suggest you stay with Dino oil, NOT synthetic - the seals may leak with synthetic in these older engines not designed for it.
looking forward to meeting you.

The car has what looks like an original Affalterbach sticker, could have just been put on though, ill snap a picture of it soon. It was imported from germany new for a guy in japan, then imported from japan to here. So its not much different then the euro ones, besides the front bumper. Not an mb pro yet so im not to sure about all the differences.
