Regular model - with 4.2 litre V8 engine, hence "420".

E320 is a six cylinder 3.2 litre - simple.

The E420 had the V8, modified transmission with different valvebody, and suspension upgrades, too.

There may have been a "Sportline" variant, which is a performance-oriented trim level.

Nice car.

I'm fairly certain there was a Limited Edition for the 1995 model year in the W124.

More from another site:

"The Special Edition models were introduced around April of 1995, so not all 1995 W124 models were Special Editions. The Special Edition package included special metallic paint, special 6 hole alloy wheels, integrated analog cell phone, trunk mounted six-disk CD player, high performance 10 speaker sound system, drivers seat memory, electrically adjustable steering column (no tilt), stainless steel door sills and burl walnut interior trim. On the E320 and E300 diesel the extra cost was $1,295 for the options that were worth about $4,300. The E420 package cost only $495 since it already had burl walnut trim, driver seat memory and the high performance 10 speaker sound system. Paint colors available were Moonstone Grey, Azure Blue, Sapphire Black (exclusive to the Special Edition) and a new color called Brilliant Emerald Green. I think these were the only colors used on the Special Editions."

also, i think if you run a carfax pretty much every 1995 w124 shows up as 'special edition' whether it is or not, so that may be something to keep in mind...

Hey, Chappy! Happy Holidays...

That is exactly the information I was looking for...
I am trying to determine what to look for on the car when I test drive it next week. Not really interested in re-sale at this point.
It is an emerald green color with parchment interior and only 70k miles, one owner.

BTW, those CE wheels cleaned up really nice! Now, to wait for warm weather and I will sand them down and refinish them. Thanks, again....

The stainless doorsills are the key. On the 6-cylinder the wheels were also unique, but the E420 had different wheels. I think all of the other options could have been ordered, although the burl may have also been unique on the 6-cylinder as indicated in the earlier post by Chappy.

My 1995 E320 Special Edition in Azure Blue, but with 16" AMG Monoblock Aero I wheels. Note the stainless doorsills. I only use my stock 15" Special Edition wheels for snow tires in winter.

Stainless doorsills are great

To me, Azure Blue is a very special color

Stock Special Edition 15" wheels for winter

Love makes you do crazy things.

I'm getting an evaporator in April. So far the leaky head gasket and shift flair have not gotten worse. I do hope that everything doesn't go all at once, but I am prepared to pay to keep the car. The older it gets the more I like it.

Chappy,

I drove the E420 yesterday and made an offer. Just waiting on the acceptance now. Terrific car! Turns out it is sapphire black metallic with grey interior.

The integrated cell phone system...is there any use of the system these days? Can a current phone be used with the system w/ or w/o mods?

Unfortunately all analog service was discontinued early in 2008, so the old integrated phone is now useless. I was not able to find any solution that took advantage of the integrated system, sans phone. The good news is that deleting/unplugging the phone in the armrest and removing the components in the trunk, frees up some nice extra storage space. I miss my integrated phone! It really was a nice feature!

If you find something that uses the old system, please let me know.

As ksing44 pointed out, analog service is no longer available.

Does it free up space in the trunk too? If so, where? I'm all for more room in this car. I'm 6'8" and I my car is always full of clothes for some reason, lol.

In my 1995 E320 there was a plain black metal box in the depression behind the wheel on the driver side in the trunk. It was secured with 3 screws that were hidden under the edge of the glued down carpet. There was also an antennae attachment that simply unscrewed. The depression is handy for storing things in the trunk.
