Lowering the 87 300DT idea..
I've read that you need the spring coil compressor, specific for the car.
I have an aftermarket one here at home, I was thinking if I attach the compressor to the spring with the tire ON, tighten it down somewhat, then jack up the car....shouldn't the spring slide right on out?
Just an idea, to avoid the spring in full rebound then attempting to collapse it, with it arching the way it does.

Theres tons of threads on here about pulling springs out and almost all of them point to buying/renting the mercedes spring compressor tool. I don't think anyone has found a viable aftermarket compressor tool.

Yeah I've been reading through a good amount of the threads on all the different forums.
Turns out I did it with great success tonight on my front springs.
1.) Broke loose tire lugs
2.) Raise vehicle & support on jackstand
3.) Remove tire
4.) Used a 'pittsburgh spring compressor' to compress the spring somewhat
5.) Lowered control arm via two large bolts w/jack (22mm)
6.) Slide H&R lowering springs in, and raised via jack.
Turned out pretty simple actually.
