1995 e420 sport line suspension conversion?

I was wandering if anybody did this conversion before on a 95 e420, and what are the components needed to do the job.

Thanks
Mike

Mike:

Get on the EPC and look for Sports undercarriage or Sports chassis.

Thanks

EPC = Electronic Parts Catalog.

I'd say check out the info here and see if you can't find the list of parts:

Like Sajin said it's the Electronic Parts Catalogue.

Mercedes makes it available free (for North American cars).

http://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/home.jsp

It's the official MB item.

When you go to order parts don't forget all the little items like fasteners, etc. Most fasteners are one use only. Better to order them and have them laying around than to find out you need them in the middle of the job.

After you determine what parts you need bring the list to several MB dealers and get a quote. Don't forget the Internet suppliers like Rusty at buymbparts and some of the others. Prices will very between dealers, at least in the Chicago area.
The EPC will also give you an idea as to where everything goes and what other parts you might need "while you're there."

I just had a fuel filter changed and while the car was on the lift I replaced the exhaust mountings, no extra charge for labor as it was a 30 second job but if I needed just that they have to put it on the lift, etc. There would be a 1/2 hour charge for that alone. The parts were $10 or so. You get the idea.
Most Sportline parts are only available from MB dealers by the way.
Instead of the official Sportline front shocks I would suggest Bilstein Sports, MUCH less expensive and a little more firm.

I would also suggest that you get the Euro EPC as well, an extra $12 a year. That will give you access to all the other neat stuff that wasn't available in the US.

You can order them from Speed Auto-Teille in Germany, they ship world wide.

But.... before you spend ANY money run it past this, and other, boards. Everyone and their brother-in-law will have opinions as to if what you're doing is a good idea, what will - and will not work, etc.

Kind Regards,

Ron

See post #23 at this thread:

https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...uspension.html

What parts you order depends on how much $$$ you want to spend. The entire kit will cost a bundle, and require some special tools to install some of the bushings.

I've done it on a couple of 6-cyl cars, but not an E420 - yet. I plan on doing it eventually. I have the car and about half the parts. It will make the ride noticeably firmer, but body roll is reduced. If you're not particuarly attached to the E420, it is far more cost effective to just buy a 500E/E500 instead, which comes with everything from the factory, plus another 50hp, larger brakes, and flared fenders.

I was looking into buying a 500e/e500 but I really cant afford it right now, plus the e420 I have only has 7000 miles on it and I thing worth keeping.

e420 sportline conversion done

So, I finally did it. We took me the whole weekend, a lot of cursing and blood loss, but it was worth it. First I did the front with sport line springs, sportline struts, 500e sway bar and lca bushings. Then the next day I did the rear including, sportline springs, sport line shocks, 500e sway bar and 500e subframe bushing. I have to tell you that it is a big improvement in the handling, ride quality and I would recoment this upgrade to anyone who wants to do it. I bought all the parts from the dealer for about $1600.00, and the best thing about it is that you keep your car original. I want to thank everyone who helped me in this thread. I'm really happy with the outcome.

The Sportline badge for the front fender is p/n 201-817-13-20, current MSRP is $31 each.

94 Wagon and 94 Cabriolet
You now have my favorite e420, even without seeing the pics.

I ran a Suzuki/Kawasaki/Yamaha/Arctic Cat dealership @ 387 N. Courtland St E Stbg many years and lives ago. Kept the house in the Poconos but it's primary function anymore is garage / storage.

I'll drop you a note in 2-3 weeks when I pass through E burg to pick up the Cabriolet. My house is on the mountain next to Camelback's mountain. Mebe we could take a few pics?

500E Signal Rot
You can't use the Sportline badges without 1. Sportline steering wheel, 2. Sportline shift knob and 3. Sportline steering box.

Probably in your case, the 500e steering box would be best.

I did some reasearch on the steering box and found the 500e box is the same like the one on E420. E320's box wont fit on the v8 models.

Correct. The E420 Sportline box was only installed on the .034 Sportline model, which was not sold in the USA. I was told that this box is NLA in Germany but I never tried to order one. This box would actually be an upgrade to the 500E. I always wondered why the 500E didn't get that box with the quicker ratio.

BTW - awesome car! Should be interesting to see what the final bid is:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=260623327324

I have a NOS Sportline steering wheel, new in box, if you're interested btw. Haven't had time to post it for sale on the forums yet.

My Poor Man’s E500

I converted my 1994 E420 to handle like my 16V instead of a Cadillac. My contact at AMG gave me the details: E500 front springs, shocks, and swaybar. euro E430 Sportline springs, shocks, and E500 swaybar. Transformed the car. Ride height was a bit lowered and the handling amazing with 16-inch 8-hole ATS wheels from Tire Rack. Be careful to get the right offset.
