Gas coming out of overflow pipe

Gas coming out of overflow pipe
I filled up with gas this past Thurs, making sure not to overflow. However this morning, I smelled gas, and looked underneath the car and saw gas dripping out of an overflow pipe. Is this normal?

Well, I found the source of my problem rather quickly, opened up the cover of gas cap filler and saw a lot of gas sitting there, hense the reason for gas coming thru the overflow pipe. However is this normal?

Gas cap is normal, fits fine, I believe. I didn't top off, but did fill it. Possibley the gas heated up, expanded. Not sure...but yes a bizarre incident, as this has never happened to me in my 18 yrs of driving.
