Wood Console Trim
Are all the center trims the same size?
I found this piece, but I'm concerned that my mirror switch won't fit into the replacement. I also can do without the fader switch.
Can anyone confirm??
The one your looking at in your picture, lacks the fader switch, and that mirror switch looks to be a different type,so thats also a bit unclear as to how it would go.
I think it would be best if you can find one that is exactly the same as your original, including the fader switch.
Your original is exactly like the one i have in my 92' 300CE-24,and it's also just like the one pictured below. Here is a picture of one i found at carshine.com....

I'm going to either get mine refurbished locally,or just buy a brand new one from the Merc dealer. My car is in concourse condition, other then this piece, which has only a couple of small cracks in the clear finish, but it bugs me enough to want it absolutely perfect like the rest of the car.
I have a question myself.....i went to see if i could take out my centre console piece, and i understand that once you undo the single screw under carpet at the base, the whole piece should just lift off.
The problem is,the switches seemed attached to the wood somehow, and therfor, they are coming up with the wood. It does'nt come up far (only about an inch), because of the wires that they are attached to,and i don't want to damage anything,so can someone please enlighten me on how to separate the switches from the wood? Many thanks.

The original has a larger hole for the shifter.
As for removal: The screw in the back (towards the back seat) should release the wood as you pull up from the back. My switches were stuck but gave up their hold pretty quickly. Turned out to be gunk holding them in, they are not attached to the wood.
Yep,that screw in the back (towards the back seat) does release the whole piece, but my switches seem really well attached and seemingly, without any give at all.
If it's just accidentally stuck with some gunk, i could attempt to prize it apart with a thin blade or something, but before i do, could someone else please confirm this situation with the switches and the wood,on these later w124's with the burl walnut?...(That they are NOT attached to each other buy either clips or screws).
Thanks again.

It was interesting to find that the mirror switch, and the fader switch, remain attached to the wood. Not sure how these are then separated from the wood, because it seems there plastic underframe, seems stapled to the wood.
- the switches are attached to the wood panel on early, on a bracket on the console on later years. You have to pull up on the early panel and disconnect the switches to remove it
- the shifter surround and housing are different. The later has a plastic frame while the early has a rubber frame attached to the panel that sits on the housing and the wood opening is larger
- There are optional holes for heated seats and many other options. I have a factory 1986 book with 96 variations, not including later years...
