Hi
I just bought a 88 300E with the manual transmission and need to replace the torn shifter boot in the center console. I can't figure out how to remove the shifter/ shift knob and can't find instructions in the workshop manual CD's. Can anyone help.
Thanks

Hi Prossech,
Since your post have you found out how to remove the top of the shiftknob?
I'd appreciate if you can share the knowledge as a search hasn't come up with anything.
Thanks,
Jeremy

In the meantime I've found out how to do it in the W126
It's easier done if first you can loosen the lock nut which is below the knob.
To get to the lock-nut you have to have removed the sack first (and if you want to change the sack then you have to remove it anyway), the base of which wraps around a plastic frame which fits in the wood insert which surrounds the gearstick.
I don't know if the W124 is the same as the W126, but in the W126 to remove the gearstick surround you have to first remove the ashtray, then pull up the storage bin which is below it, and then the gearstick surround pushes forwards and out easily.
