Low Brake Pedal

I was driving my 93 300TE last night and as I was coming to a stop light, the car did not brake as usual and the brake pedal went down real low. Now the first few inches of pedal travel provide no braking and you really have to go almost to the floor to get it to stop. The brake fluid level is normal. When the engine is shut and I pump the pedal it does not get hard and stay at the top. there is no resistance till it goes almost half way. Any ideas? Does the system need to be bled or is it more serious?

Ok. Since no one had the answer to the problem, I will post it for your benefit. The car is fixed. It was a corroded rear brake line. I guess the car is old now and things like that are bound to happen. A new line and a bleeding fixed it.
