Me about an hour the first time on my 500e without instruction, to remove the stock knob and completely install the new one. The 500e has the "B" switch on it which gets in the way, so it could potentially take you less.

Lift up your armrest.
Slide back the cover of the console box.
Remove the two screws from the interior lower front of the console box.
These screws fix the box to the console.
Lift the box from the console.
Put the car in neutral with the e-brake on.
Remove the one screw in the lower front of the console that holds the wood shifter trim to the console.
Lift the wood trim up and out over the shifter and set aside.
The shifter/knob assembly is threaded into the shifter mechanism.
I don't recall, but there may be a set screw that you have to first loosen before unthreading the shifter.

I just recovered a Sportline shifter for a friend and installed it a couple of weeks back, so the details are still fresh.
