Installed a 2.82 Rear and 23 Gallon Tank in my E420

I recently installed a 2.82 rear and 23 gallon gas tank in my ASR-equipped 95 e420. My first year with the car was spent doing things that I needed to do (maintenance, new parts, etc...) and finally got to do something I wanted to do.

I had intentions to get some quarter mile baseline numbers car before the swap but did not. I went to my friend's house to head out to the track but his 11 sec Grand National was misfiring so he did not want to race it. We were looking at my car on the lift in his garage with all the parts and decided to skip the track and just get it done.

The rear end installed as easily as has been described in several previous threads. The ABS/ASR wire harness came with the rear so I did not have to open the sensors in the carrier. They were was literally plug and play. The hardest part (not physically) was putting the wheel sensors back on. Worked very slow with those delicate pieces.

Gas tank was a smooth installation as well. The only challenge was keeping the vapor hoses from getting caught and pinched while putting the new tank in. It was more annoying than difficult, but only took 10 minutes or so. The bottom right side was where the problem was.

Only two PITAs to report:
- A clamp I put on to pinch the fuel line between the tank and filter let go as I was maneuvering it into a container causing about a gallon or so of gas to pour out on me and the floor.
- I stepped on and broke the disposable camera we were using to document everything so I have no pictures

Like those before have said, the car is much quicker that before all the way through third gear.

Two things left to do: correct the speedometer and fuel gauge. I think I have the right ideas and process, but am open to your comments and suggestions.

I have been looking for a 500e speedo or cluster. Does anyone have one or an idea of where to get one? I know it will be off 3% or so, but I can live with that difference. I am due for tires soon and could go a little bigger to bring it between 1% and 2%. Or just get a converter box and call it a day.

The fuel gauge sender in the gas tank is different between the 18 gallon (white) and 23 gallon (yellow) tanks. They need to match the fuel gauge instrument in the dash. I could either switch the sending unit from the 18 gallon tank into the 23 gallon tank or use the gauge from a 500e cluster.

Finally, many thanks to David Hendy and AMGDave. David supplied parts and guidance. He even took a phone call during the installation to help. Dave answered some questions about the project as well before I started. I also picked up a 92LH module from him to add more pop to the car.

I wanted to run it before the swap but getting it done took priority. I will run it with the 92LH module and with the stock and post those numbers. I think the module will add power to your 93. It has added about 15 hp to my car.

Wouldn't changing tire size put you right back where you were?

Right now my speedo is calibrated for a 2.24 rear and 195/65/15 tires. I am running 225/45/17 so the diameter is the same as stock. My speedo is now reading from a 2.82 rear and therefore is off about 25%. My thought is that if I put a 500e speedo in with a tire size similar to a 500e (stock 225/55/16), it should be accurate within 1%. If I install a 500e speedo with my current tires, the speedo will be off 3%. so 60MPH will read 62MPH.
