is the tensioner automatic or is it adjustable? do they go bad? i have screwed the adjuster left and right and not much seems to be happening. the bearing sounds and feels ok just not enough tension on belt

Probably wrong sequence in loosening and tightening the tensioner. You will probably need a new tensioner as the bolt on the thread on the old one is now bad. The Sticky at this Forum has a DIY section on tensioner?

All the signs of a bad tensioner. Hopefully you didn't thread the bolt out so much that you bent the bolt. These tensioners are a poor design, you can search and find tons of post on this same opinion. Buy a new one. It's a DIY with some patience as most of the bolts are pretty tricky to get to. Do a search, as QVHK suggested. There are some good write ups but I don't think there's one on the sticky...
