1987 Mercedes 300D Turbo
Question Recalls? Horsepower?

Hey all, i'm the proud owner of a 1987 300D Turbo. I've heard that there's a recall for the trap oxidizer for the turbo in this car. Is this recall still in effect? Is there a way i can check to see if it has been performed on my car? Is it free? How much horsepower does this car have? Lastly, is there any performance mods for a diesel? I would sure love to smoke some ricers in a diesel Thanks

Yes, hey sir
Um it looks like the second relay on that box is gonna have to be your isotronic sensor, thats for the field sweep only. You might have to have Nike check that out and verify its integrity, but chancecs are your gonna have the third point. Whatever the case, good luck with your Yamaha.

Seriosly, can someone help this guY? I have no idea.

damn...

I posted a longer reply, but it got lost.

Just call mercedes and see if this recall has been performed on your car.
It is free, and make sure they check your boost pressure, because if it is too low, they will replace your turbo for free too.

The trap looks like a big football to the passenger side of your engine. The replacement is smaller and looks like a pretty straight pipe with insulation wrapped around it. If you have the football, go down to your local dealer and he will fix you up.

I noticed a very nice performance increase when I had the trap replaced on my first 87 300D. I wouldn't recommend any other performance mods, I mean, why did you buy a diesel in the first place?

Smile Thanks

Thanks for the tip. There is a metal pipe with what looks like aluminum foil wrapped around it. Now, can i still take it to the dealership and ask them to check the boost pressure or will they charge me for it now since the recall has already been performed?

good deal

No, they will probably charge you to check the boost pressure (some places might not), but they will definately charge you to replace the turbo now.

I remember reading in my manual, and it seemed pretty easy to check the boost pressure.

Oh yeah.
The HP for your car is around 145, with about 190 ft/lbs of torque.
I think both of these numbers are higher after the trap is removed.

It's pretty amazing that they can take a 6 cyclinder 3.0 liter engine (just like ours), and in the 2004 model get 250 horses and 350 ft/lbs of torque out of it. Not to mention 35 mpg, instead of the 27 or so I get. I hear the engine is so efficient it doesn't produce enough heat to heat the cabin, they have to use an electric heater.
I want one.

1987 300D specs

FACTORY SPEC
Original stock form for 1987 is

143 bhp @ 4600rpm
195 lb/ft @ 2400rpm

w/out trap

148 bhp @ 4600rpm
201 lb/ft @ 2400rpm

How accurate are those numbers though? I don't know, but I once lost a race to a 1987 300D turbo, he fell behind a car length then rapidly caught up. We raced to about 85 mph. I was driving, *gasp*, a 1995 E320 (this was my mother's car). I've driven US spec 300E's, US spec 420SEL's, US spec 560SEC/SEL's, and I swore the E320 could beat them all! What an embarrassment to lose to a DIESEL!! That's why I got one. Drive a really nice example, and you'll know what I'm talking about. As far as ricers go, let them play their games. You'll be alive and well long after these guys are found dead on the curbside in their 1500 lb modified Honda Civic wrecks with 19 " wheels and about 1/4 inch rubber. I am a little sick of the 300D / SDL being called slow, however, because they're not. 0-60 in anything over 9.0 seconds feels slow to me.

The 300D can be modified, but I wouldn't try anything too outrageous. At least if you want to keep the car a while. Disable the EGR, increase the fuel supply to the engine, and adjust the ALDA to compensate. The ALDA controls the fuel and air mixture. This gives you more bhp and torque and there is NO apparent turbo lag!

My two cents on making a diesel quicker: K & N Air Filter, Mobil Delvac 1 Motor Oil, Mobil Synthetic ATF, Red Line Synthetic Rear end oil. replace warped brake rotors, replace fuel filters regularly, 36 psi front and rear tires, clean the intake manifold hose that senses boost pressure, remove the intake manifold and clean out all the oil, sludge and coke that has built up, adjust the ALDA screw 1/4 turn counterclockwise, buy high quality diesel or use RL-3 diesel ignition improver from Red Line Oil, wax the car and the underbody engine cover to reduce drag. If anyone has anything to offer I would enjoy reading it.
