1992 400E
400E in limp mode

Hi Guys,

I have a problem with my 1992 400E. I seem to be in limp home mode as one half of my ignition system is not firing. I have replaced both ignition coils, rotors, spark plugs and wires. I have also replaced the electronic accelerator.

I have check the connections on the ignition control unit EZL. I beleive the crackshaft sensor is OK, as if I disconnect it from the EZL while the engine is running the engine stops.

I checked the diagnostics socket pin 4 switching output to coil 1 with a 12 volt test light and found a solid light. The switching output, pin 1 of the diagnostics socket, to coil 2 appears to be OK as the test light flashes while the engine is at idle

How is the upper wiring harness?

Its hard to believe that the original might still be in there (they were junk right from the get-go and MB admitted it). If it is the original, change it out asap. The new (good) ones should be marked 'made in Poland'.

LH mode can be hard to diagnose on the M119. Usually, the first things to change out are the bad harnesses if its the originally supplied one.

The lower harness can also be troublesome on the V8 w124. Cheaper to buy but harder to install.
