Glass sunroof for W124? Where to buy? How to make?

Hello all! I have recently bought a stunning '92 Brilliant Silver W124 300 CE-24 which I truly love as I think it is one of the best cars ever made (along with the whole W124, W123 and W126 line) and it makes me smile every time I drive it.
I'm aiming for 100% stock original condition during repairs and restoration.
However, there is one little detail, the original sunroof has broken down, to be precise, it doesn't close evenly and is also a bit rusty which made me think of a replacement.
Is it possible to "upgrade" to a glass sunroof? W123 got it, W140 got it, W210 got it .. why not W124? Please help, any advice will be highly appreciated  :y

Of course it is possible. I just can not find a company that will make one. I have seen custom jobs on certain TV shows, but have not have luck in my searches (and I have searched hard). Please do update this thread if you find any info.

off topic: i guess it's a testament to these cars that even with a stable like yours, you still think so highly of the w124...!

Ask Voyage, he might know how..
Here is his 124 with glass sunroof and more: https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...vip-style.html

I think his step by step instructions begin with wadding up a very large quantity of cash.

Absolutely, the W124 deserves it. It has the correct *fun to drive / solid feel / maintenance costs / appearance* ratio.. :zoom:
I have driven a lot of cars but sincerely, you don't need a $200k+EUR car to feel good about driving it.. less is sometimes more (I kinda wish I knew this earlier but of course I am not sorry about it, everything has its time and place :))

Kind of curious as to why you would want to switch to a glass sunroof after you said in your first post that you want to keep it 100% original.

OK let me correct it, 99% original :y I think everything else is perfect except small details due to the age eg. if you are used to W221 xenons, you may find yourself a bit "in the dark" using 20year old halogen lamps :D
However, regarding the ride and solid feel, it is an excellent car in every other way.
I would not upgrade the lamps for xenons for example because such upgrade doesn't fit and look hideous. The sunroof is OK IMO.

I would love to have a moonroof as well. I miss that from my G35.

on a side note, "rivcal".......are those your track numbers from Cali Speedway dragstrip???

What if you take out the sunroof, and take it to a glassshop and ask them to cut you a glass in that size

myfirstbenz 12-16-2010 11:26 PM

I saw a guy put a w210 moon roof in his w124. I'll have to look for his post. It is an awfully tempting idea.

HI... use W210 moonroof and interior :y

HighRoller 12-29-2010 10:15 PM

:nix:

canonball 01-04-2011 09:23 PM

ok we need a write up of how to do the mod

the_widebody 01-05-2011 08:09 AM

the more i think of it the more i want it...

RHW 01-06-2011 07:56 AM

Yea, this is one of the nicer upgrades that most of us have never seen before. I would like an idea of the work involved and time it took.

MercedesMania 01-06-2011 01:08 PM

If you already have sunroof. It's easier to swap moonroof from W210.

But you don't have the sunroof !! Cut the roof it's only way to mod.

Can you explain a little MORE???? Please :nix::smash::X

the_widebody 01-09-2011 12:26 PM

i 'think' the guy means, if you have a sunroof, then use a 210 mechanism, and if you haven't got a sunroof, you will have to cut a hole in your roof... because if you just place a moon roof cassette on the top of your car, you wont be able to see through it, and when you drive, it will fall off lol

MercedesMania 01-14-2011 02:34 AM

That I mean. Thanks so much Wide Body. Sorry for my English.
