Hmm...
I think the first time I changed my fuel filter I had to crank it for about 20 seconds before it started and stayed started.
Ever since then I have used diesel purge when I change the fuel filter and I fill my filter up with that after I change it and then run a can through my engine.
It works pretty well, and I don't have to worry about that empty fuel filter making me crank my engine for a long time....

the best way is fill up the new filter with clean fuel b4 fitting
fill the new filter through the outer holes so the risk of contaminants reaching the fuel pump is reduced.

Mercedes diesels are self-priming/purging.
You may need to crank the engine 30 seconds or more.
Check the manual for more details.
(If you crank for 30 seconds, be sure to stop for 2-3 minutes, to let the starter cool down, before cranking again).
It will eventuall prime & run fine.
(Been there done that - bad fuel gauge in '87300TD)
