Low speed rolling noise

Hello,

I have a 1993 W124 Coupe (300CE) and have a problem that my mechanic can't seem to figure out...

There is a low speed rolling noise that happens anywhere from around 3mph to 10mph.

- Can't tell what side it's coming from (e.g. front / back / left / right)
- Can hear it pretty well in the interior of the car
- Can hear it when the brakes are applied
- Can't hear it if gas applied
- Changes frequency with speed

It sounds like a "whompwhompwhomp" type sound.

My mechanic tried to repack the wheel bearings but the noise persists!

Thanks!!

Easy - tires! I manage 20000 km on fresh front tires, then they start to thump. That's a pain as I get 80000 km from a set of tires! They tend to wear every second rib more than the next on the inside. I run 225 45 17 on the front of my 124.

Get a pair of tires that are fresh, or even take the rears to the front and try it out. I'd be surprised if you still have the noise.

Kevin.

autounion with just 4 posts here...makes loads of sense. Rotate those tires.

Also climb under you car and check for my missing cat.

Are all of your brake pads in good condition?

Not the tires since I just switched to my winter set and the noise still persists...

Brake pads will likely need to be replaced in a few months, but otherwise they seem in good condition. Rotors too. I don't notice any vibration when braking. The noise happens both when I'm braking or coasting, but not when I'm accelerating..
