500e????
I'm thinking bout getting a '93 500E w/ 70-89k miles. I'm more interested in the reliability of the cars. I need something for my daily driver and was wondering if anyone knows about their reliability. I'll be my only car and will be driving roughly 20 miles a day. I just don't want to get stuck with a car thats in the shop every other month. any tips advice, stories would be greatly appreciated.
Now I don't totally know about their reliabity, I assume they are the same as 400E's, and late model E320's, and they have a good track record.
Depending on the condition on how you get it, it shouldn't be in the shop every other month, although currently my 300E has been in the shop more than I have driven it since February (but thats cause the car wasn't taken care of).
So, thats all i can say. Either way, most people won't care what condition its in. If I had the money and time I would love to buy one of those in terrible shape and fix up the interior real nice and get the engine in great shape.
Good luck to ya!
They are quite reliable...up until around 120,000 miles then stuff needs attention and it is quite expensive..but then again, what car doesn't need work at that mileage. I'm at 136K now and have done all that was needed in the past few years, much of it myself; they aren't any harder to work on than a regular W124. Ask me what I had to do.
Daily driver...sure man, if you can keep it around the speed limit and have someone else paying for gas (I get about 12 mph but I have a lead prosthetic foot!!!)...Since 'restoring' and upgrading I use the car only on nice days and on the track. It is more of a piece of history than a 'daily driver' but I know many 500E owners who do drive it all the time...even in winter!!
Exactly 10,000 were made between 90-95'...the last one being silver with a red interior given to the driver of the original MB Silver Arrow; Hans Hermann.
As special car, no doubt, and with the current used car market at rock bottom...you could pick one up for cheap money like me...I paid $18.5K 3 years ago. Snag one...you won't be sorry !!!
