500e????

Hey guys,

I'm thinking bout getting a '93 500E w/ 70-89k miles. I'm more interested in the reliability of the cars. I need something for my daily driver and was wondering if anyone knows about their reliability. I'll be my only car and will be driving roughly 20 miles a day. I just don't want to get stuck with a car thats in the shop every other month. any tips advice, stories would be greatly appreciated.

hmm, mmh. Well, first off you will want to drive more than 20 miles a day. The 500E is an amazing, amazing, amazing, how bout one more amazing car.

Now I don't totally know about their reliabity, I assume they are the same as 400E's, and late model E320's, and they have a good track record.

Depending on the condition on how you get it, it shouldn't be in the shop every other month, although currently my 300E has been in the shop more than I have driven it since February (but thats cause the car wasn't taken care of).

So, thats all i can say. Either way, most people won't care what condition its in. If I had the money and time I would love to buy one of those in terrible shape and fix up the interior real nice and get the engine in great shape.

Good luck to ya!

Although I do not have a 500E I do have a 400E and since I bought in August I have put nearly 20,000 almost trouble free miles on it. I just have that idle problem right when I start and had to replace the waterpump which I did myself. This car seems to be solid and since the 500E is almost the same car I would imagine not having any continous trouble.

Well...the 93 isn't the most desirable model 500E...it has the de-tuned engine (minus 9 hp) and the older style front end (which is just fine w/euro-lites, IMO)

They are quite reliable...up until around 120,000 miles then stuff needs attention and it is quite expensive..but then again, what car doesn't need work at that mileage. I'm at 136K now and have done all that was needed in the past few years, much of it myself; they aren't any harder to work on than a regular W124. Ask me what I had to do.

Daily driver...sure man, if you can keep it around the speed limit and have someone else paying for gas (I get about 12 mph but I have a lead prosthetic foot!!!)...Since 'restoring' and upgrading I use the car only on nice days and on the track. It is more of a piece of history than a 'daily driver' but I know many 500E owners who do drive it all the time...even in winter!!

One more ting mang, well, maybe a few more tings...the 500E has some 4000 parts that differ from a regular W124 (believe it or not). True, it shares a ton of things with the regular W124 and W201 but much extra R&D went into the development of the car..which was put together at Porsche's Rossel-Blau factory on the same exact assembly line by the Porsche techs that bulit the Porsche 959 and Audi RS4 (you DO know what those cars are don't ya'?).

Exactly 10,000 were made between 90-95'...the last one being silver with a red interior given to the driver of the original MB Silver Arrow; Hans Hermann.

As special car, no doubt, and with the current used car market at rock bottom...you could pick one up for cheap money like me...I paid $18.5K 3 years ago. Snag one...you won't be sorry !!!
