ECM HELP!

I have a 93 300CE and am trying to find a replacement ECM. Found several, but the numbers of the units don't match the numbers on my damaged unit. My question is: How critical is the number matching??
If they made a 300CE from 88-93, why won't any ECM from an 88-93 300CE work? I suppose auto vs standard drive would make a difference, but??? Thanks, Bill

Bill, look up your car by VIN in the Startek EPC. Its free, but you need to put in Credit Card info anyway for the 12 month subscription.

Mercedes often superceded part numbers with better revisions, that could be why you can't find one that matches directly. They'll have the superceding chain in the EPC showing you what is the latest/greatest part number you should get.
