two questions

I have two things I would like to ask, and I'll include some pictures for reference.

1) In the rear, where in newer models (relative to my '89), I've seen first aid kit thingies. On my car it has something resembling a speaker grill, although I think it might just be discolored. When I looked in the trunk I could see that there is nothing under this cover. After looking at speaker installation guides a while ago I don't think it has anything to do with that so I was just wondering if anyone can tell me what it is. This is the obect in question:

2) I recently noticed this thing sticking out from under my front bumper. I followed the wire back to the fuse box but I don't know what it is. I'm guessing it might be the outside temperature sensor?

Any help as to what #1 is and how I can fix #2 would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

that is the outside thermometer. It should be screwed on underneath your liscence plate.

My '87 has the first aid cubby, so I don't know what that space is in yours. Was the first aid kit an option?

I believe it was an option but I don't remember because I'm not the original owner and it doesn't say in the manual. I've seen others from the same year with them though. Thanks for the tip about the thermometer.

It looks like someone has removed the first aid kit to put in a sub-woofer. The speakers in the W124 are very small and it's one of the few places a sub will fit.
