What is normal temperature?

I've recently noticed when I'm driving my temperature guage slow approaches close to 120. The car does not overheat . When I jump on the highway and I'm doing 80MPH the temperature guage jumps down to 80. I know this is normal. Is it normal for my temperature guage to go pass 110.

On the V-8 models it is said to be normal, on the 6 cylinder versions that is high. My car is a V-8 and when I had a bad water pump it would do what your car does, now that it is fixed it rarely goes that high. I would suggest going through your cooling system for leaks and faulty parts, such as a thermostat.

I have 1993 400E. I notice my coolant level going down fairly quickly. I filled it up Thursday nite, I checked it again Saturday afternoon, it was pretty low. I will add coolant Sunday morning and then check Sunday evening. I see my rad light come on occasionally. The light does not stay on, it goes off after awhile.
I've noticed vapor smoke, when I parked Friday nite, coming from under the car, front area. I suspect a leak. Will not get a chance until Monday to check with my mechanic. My water pump is new, my thermostat is new. All major hoses are new.

Hi 1stmbenz,

I also got same problem a months ago with my Benz 300E 24V 1989. But now already fixed it and the temperature going normal on 85 Celcius maximum while traffic. On 70 Celcius while in Highway. Maybe you can do same with mine. You must tell to your mechanic to open the engine block and see what happen inside the engine block ? is it dirty or not ? If dirty, you must clean it and after clean it and change the seal and put Jet Clean with 6 bar of pressure and also change Engine Temperature sensor, Fan Clutch and thermostat with max degree 71 Celcius. Hope this can help you from high temperature. Good Luck.

This is what i've replaced so far

The fan relay, the thermostat, and water pump. My temperature still goes alittle beyond 100. Still seems too high. Not too sure what steps I should take next in lowering the temperature. Car does not overheat. I recently had my heads redone.
