When was the last time you looked at shocks/springs? Also, how about rear subframe bushings?

Also check the condition of the rear control arm link bushings (there are three links with five bushings and one ball joint per side) and the outer lower control arm bushings. Worn out rubber bushings or ball joints here can result in a camber/cast/toe change upon acceleration/deceleration which acts to "steer" the car from the rear and gives rise to that "floaty" feeling you describe. Also check the rear sway bar links as a broken one will allow for too much rear end sway causing oversteer which can cause the rear end to want to kick out.

i just replaced rear sway bar links, and looked at the other links in the system, which are old and probably need replacement. the only ones i cannot really see are the lower control arm bushings. looks like i will need to buy lots of rear suspension parts to get it back in spec.
