Rip Off Alert
I got an estimate to have the hood of my W124 repainted along with the wiper delete panels. $1,530 or something like that. I was thinking more along the lines of 7-800 at the most. That seems extremely high. Any thoughts? Once again, just the hood and those two tiny panels below the headlights. The hood has some substantial clear coat deterioration but overall it is just faded. I am assuming the heat from the engine bay is responsible for this possibly because the heat shield under the hood is out. The rest of the car's paint is in remarkably good condition.

It is and it isn't, you know? I mean I've seen some folks have spent upwards of $4500-$6000 to get their W124's repainted, but those were really decent paint jobs. On the opposite side of the spectrum, a resident in one of our buildings got his W126 completely repainted for $900 at Maaco. It was a tan color and now it's a Navy Blue. It looks fair enough for a 25+ year old car that sits outside exposed to the elements and so far after 3 years still has a nice shine. So, in the end, it really depends on how much you really want to spend and how decent of a job they do. I'd shop around and personally, I'd replace the hood insulator pad thinggy before your hard earned money gets flushed down the tubes, you know? They're cheap enough on ebay...

If the shop is going to do it properly by removing the hood and sanding to remove the failing clear coat, prep, primer and match finish and clear coat then the estimate is within reason.
You can do it less expensive by just sanding on the car and finsh/clear coat...
Depends what you're looking for in a finished job..
And do install the underhood insulator pad..

Yeah, good points. I am certainly not looking for some miraculous mind blowing kind of paint job just something to improve the moderate clear coat/fading issue on the hood and replace the wiper delete panels. I have no idea how long I'll have this car, hopefully a while and with 300,000 miles and few to no issues it seems it is not going to be giving up anytime soon.
