Sudden Transmission Flaring 91 300E

The transmission in my 300E (190,000K) just started to flare between 2-3. Barely noticeable if your driving it nicely, but very noticeable when your flooring it. I have driven it 2,000 miles in the last 2 weeks. Does not flare at all on downshifts (even hard ones), just the upshifts.

K1? Vacuum Modulator? Where to look?

I had some success with mine, by adjusting the Bowden cable and tweaking the vacuum modulator. I think the reality is it may never be perfect again until you get it rebuilt, but the adjustments may help. The link below documents my adventure and learning experience while I was being advised by a master mechanic on how to make the adjustments.

1980 Mercedes 280 SE W126, Euro spec car! 1995 E320, payed $500 for it!
A "flare" as described can also be caused by clutch pack wear, or a leaking clutch piston seal. The Benz tranny's (722.3, 722.4) exhibit this in some cases, especially if the tranny has high miles, and has never been rebuilt or replaced, it could well be a sign of work needed to obtain that "like new" crispness of shift. I have built a number of these over the years. -Zach
