Unhappy Valve Job

How much does a valve job on a 1988 300E usually run? My car is sounding pretty bad. I'm not sure what caused it, but it is getting gradually worse and worse. And has anyone done a valve job themself?

What is you car doing and why do you think you need a valve job? A valve (or head reconditioning) job should be done only if the car has a lot of miles on it plus has any of the following diagnosed conditions: 1) Poor compression that is not due to worn rings. 2) A blown head gasket. 3) You get a puff of smoke from the exhaust upon takeoff from a light.

I'm not sure how much the head reconditioning costs. Are you talking about having the entire job done by a mechanic or will you be removing the head?

I fully agree with KESTAS the other poster. If non of the reasons apply for your car, there is no need for a "valve job" at all. Secondly there are different "valve jobs". The cheapest is replacement of the stem seals (my guess $ 300-500). You need this is you need more than 1.5 quart of oil per 1000 miles and the spark plugs are fouled. The more expensive once are only required if the the compression is bad, or the hydraulic valves are gone, and you the clicking noise. If the clicking is only present during the warm-up phase of the engine--- dont worry:-)

Generally speaking "valve jobs" are nothing common the MB cars "need" even at high milage.
