Need help 94 E320

hey guys wutup. i need help with a 94 e320, how do the mb mechanics diagnose a check engine light? I know on bmw's they have a code lookup tool and one other procedure in which the check engine light flashes a certain amount of times, and you get the code by knowing how many times it flashes, etc...

If i wanted to pull a CEL myself, how would i go about doing it on a 94 e320? Thanks in advance

Yes, there is a port that you could hook up to a computer. It's on the passenger side in the engine bay. It's where the battery is *I think*

ok thanks. Now this computer, is it just a little code reading tool like they got for the bmw's that i can buy for $150 bucks? How can go and get the code myself? what do i need to do?

Also, i did a search and found out about the wiring harness issues on these cars.

Well, we have a 94 e320 and the wiring harness was ****ed up, so we had it replaced, now the car won't start, so we had a new ecu put in, and it still won't start, now we need to know how to pull the check engine code, do you guys think when they replaced the harness they messed something up, so that's why it won't start anymore?

Thanks in advance

08 Lexus GS350 AWD. 08 Lexus RX350 AWD - wife's. 94 MBZ E320 - still have it.
Check voltage overload regulator (I'm not sure if it is the correct name). It is located right behind the battery, just behind the plastic shield next to a computer. It looks like an aluminium box with a clear plastic lid and a fuse in it. That's what went wrong on my '94 E320, because it was getting wet. In my case the engine was cranking, but there was no spark, and the computer did not store any codes, because that regulator was keeping the computer off. The part was around $80 and it took 5 minutes to replace it.

If that's the case, in the future protect it from water dripping onto it from the plastic "gutter" just below the windshield.

Your car has a built-in led/sw at the diagnostic plug for code retieval. No code retrieval tool is needed. It's right there next to the right corner of the battery. It's on the right-side firewall that separates the battery from the engine. It's a little black box with white numbers from 1 to 16. Turn on key and push button (white number 2) - hold for 3 secs, release and count the reply code flashes--- continue on til all are flashed and original repeats. One flash is No Codes Stored..

Just checked my benz and I am getting a Code 17. Been looking around to find out about the CAN data exchange error. Where can I find the info on it and the solution?

Thanks for posting the codes! I appreciate it. My check engine light has been on for a while, I had several issues that have been resolved but the light is still on. I pulled the code, got 4 flashes which is "Air injection inoperative". What in the world does this mean?

Thanks
Adam

I've been getting the same code on my car for quite a while now. My air pump is on continually, I've had to disconnect it. A new O2 sensor and new AMM (air mass meter) didn't do the trick.

Can you read the Pin 8 and Pin 14 codes?

Read the pin 8 and pin 14 codes? All I did was push the button down for 3 seconds and it flashed 4 times. I did'nt do anything with the pins, and dont know how to . I don't think my airpump is on continually but I may not know what to listen for. I too threw a bunch of parts at the car but the light is still on.

Thanks

If any of you is in Chicago I could get DAS system pluged in to your vehicle and check every little detail about your car for as little as $50, LOL. Anyone?

Did it again today while on base...in the middle of the gratuitious storm drenching and tree wrenching today.
What is weird is she will start back up like a charm in about two minutes...
And I still have the infamous code 17...

Triggerman, read through the following link: http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforu...d.php?t=107630

Make the code reader. Use an empty film canister to mount everything. Post back if you have any questions.

Thanks Kestas, I am going to make one of these code readers. I just went out and pulled codes again from cars onboard LED diag. system, now I get 5 flashes and then hold the button for three seconds again and get 6 flashes. I can keep doing this forever and get 5 flashes then 6 flashes. So, EGR is stoped up, I will take it off and blow it out and see what that does. But what in the world is "Idle Speed control inoperate" for the 6 code? Anybody know what this is, where it is , and how to fix it?

Thanks
Adam

The acceptable way to clean the EGR tube is to run a snake through it. Most people use an old speedometer cable. The blockage is in the first few inches where it attaches to the throttle body.

Adam, are you aware of the brittle insulation problem on the engine wiring harness for your model? If not, type in "engine wiring harness" and search old posts for information. Second question -- have you replaced your engine wiring harness? Please post back.

Yes wiring harness was replaced by me about 2 mos ago. Also, new MAF sensor (not needed), OVP relay (not needed), one new coil pack (fixed the mis in the engine I had), and new Bosch Supers. I appreciate the help.

Thanks

The idle speed control module (electronic throttle actuator) also suffers from the same brittle wire insulation problem. Unfortunately, this module costs over $1000 to replace. Because of the cost, some people have taken it upon themselves to rewire it.

Oh I had forgotten the dreaded throttly actuator problem. Isnt there a company with an ebay store that will rebuild those things for around $400? Are there any DIY writups on replacing the wires in your own unit?

Thanks
