5 Speed Getrag for '93 300D 2.5 Turbo?

Hello,

I have a wonderful 1993 300D 2.5 turbo. There's a part of me that wishes it had a five speed manual transmission.

Has anyone out there done this swap?

Would a 5-speed (Getrag 717.410, I believe) from an '86 190D 2.5 normally aspirated diesel bolt up and be strong enough to handle the extra torque from the turbocharged OM602? Would the 190D (717.410) have the correct flywheel to work with the 602.962 turbo?

Are there gear ratio/final drive issues that need to be addressed in making a swap to a manual 5-speed? Does the donor 5-speed need to be diesel specific, or would a 5-speed from a gasoline engine model work?

I've been googling for answers, but would appreciate any wisdom that you can share.

Thanks,

Caleb

Maybe not

I found this thread that goes into great detail on a 5 speed swap on diesels (OM602, 603).

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/...5spd-swap.html

It's 20 pages! Makes for interesting reading.

Bottom line: not for the feinthearted. The conversion requires a customized front driveshaft. A rear differential swap is also necessary. Some issues noted include drivability/jerkiness; clutch slip at wide open throttle; issues hooking up the cruise control.
