Broken EGR Mounting Bolt

Broken EGR Mounting Bolt
While taking off my EGR to clean the tube, One of the studs that hold the EGR in place broke off. Has anyone ever had this happen and can anyone advise on ways to fix? I am pretty sure when I reassemble that I will have some kind of exhause leak. This is on a 1994 e320-my baby.

So humble ! "Some kind" of exhaust leak. You'll shake the house at idle..
Can you grab onto the stud at all? If so, a torch and wise-grips might do it.
If not replace the header. In choosing which sucks worse, drilling out the stud or replacing the header all together, I'd chose the latter. To drill it, you more than likely have to remove it anyhow.

Same thing happened to me. Even with the manifold removed, I could not drill out the old stud. The hardened stud was breaking every bit I had, and even the diamond tipped ones were taking literally hours to make any noticeable progress.
Maybe if you have enough to grip onto, you will be able to grab it with some vise grips and get a good turn. Of course, after spraying it a few times with PB Blaster and letting it soak.
I ended up just replacing my manifold with one from a junk yard for $25.

Only about a 1/4 of an inch broke off. Not enough to get the nut back on. So I do have a lot to grab on to. I started soaking it last night and will continue to for the next 24 hours because of my workschedule. I will try a torch and hopefully with some luck and a lot of determination I will be able to remove it.

Lady luck is on my side. Since only the top part of the stud broke off it was an easy fix. I simply used a large C clamp to tighten the EGR valve down. as I done that it cleared space for me to get a nut on the broken stud. I got a bite on the nut from the treads of the broken stud and was able to tighten it down. Now a have a clean tube and she is purring like a well fed kitty.

Really none in ride or performance. Check engine light stayed on. Checked codes and it was pointing at the EGR valve. Its a sexy car but not so sexy when your check engine light is on.
