'87 300E neutral start switch?
My take is that it is related to the neutral start switch. Where are the electricals located in relation to this?
TIA, Joe

On another forum, someone suggested checking the bushings on the shift linkage rod. Huh, there were none! No evidence whatsoever, but so much play at each end of the rod it makes me wonder how it shifted at all.

This is a fairly simple switch to replace and is located on the left side of the transmission. It has a black cable attached with a round plug on the end of it. There is a white (if yours is clean) locking ring which needs to be rotated about 1/4 turn to release the plug. This ring is part of the switch, so you can look at the new switch to figure out which way to rotate it. Once the plug is off you need to remove the shifter rod lever (tranny end) and two screws holding the switch to the tranny. Installation is just the reverse.
