lifter problem

1990 300E 2.6L
Unhappy lifter problem
Very soon after solving fuel problem, replaced fuel pumps and regulator, I developed a flutter at idle and on acceleration. Once I opened hood while running, could hear the sound of a lifter collapsing, causing the miss at the same time. I pulled valve cover, but unable to determine which lifter maybe at fault. All seem to be functioning properly and no visible defects, even when turning with starter. Anyone with experienced advice would be appreciated. This is 1990 300E 2.6L
