Check engine light never on?

Check engine light never on?
When I turn my car to run (but not start), all the lights on the dash light up. ASR, SRS, Brake, etc. They all light up as they're supposed to, except the check engine light. I tried to read my codes on my 1994 E320 and when I push the button on diagnostic port 2, there is no red LED. I watched this video and tried to do what this guy did:
When I press mine, I get no light, and when I hold in for 2-4 seconds, I get no flashes. So no red LED at all. Do you think my previous owner removed the check engine light bulb, and that is causing this malfunction?
I am about to build a code reader to diagnose my ASR light and ABS lights, should I not waste my time?

Gahh, I bought this car for $500 hoping to turn a profit on it. The interior is in near-immaculate condition and the exterior is excellent for the year as well. So far I have no bites on it.

Well Todd, somewhat late in life but you just learned your first automotive economics lesson---Go to Ace hardware and buy a stick of dynamite---then call homeland security for a tax deduction!!

Late in life? I am 20 years old, halfway through a college degree, and have a job lined up. This is nothing but side work for me. I am restoring a true classic for myself, and I flip cars on the side to fund it. The last flip car I doubled my money on. Just need to find someone to buy this now, just like any car
