OK What is this sound!

My 93 300ce with 197,000 miles has been making a clicking sound ( sounds like a playing card in a bicycle spoke) from the transmission only when in reverse and backing up for the last 30,000 miles.

I have replaced the center support bearing, trans mount and both flex disks 10,000 miles ago.

The transmission shifts smooth through all gears and no other issues. But now I am hearing a simular sound but with a more of a rumble when I first pull away from start in drive, once over 5mph it goes away.

Any ideas on what is going on with the transmission? or do I have something else going on?

Once again I would put the car on a lift and under the conditions you describe determine, under no load, if the clicking sound is still present---if so locate the clicking sound

it sounds like it's starting to give out, you will probably need to rebuild it soon

Reverse is the generally the first thing to go on these transmissions.
