94 e320 coupe problems...

hello all,

I just picked up a 94 w124 coupe with the m104 and 123k miles for 1700 bucks. I know i was going to be putting a little work into it but I would just like some advice. Here are my main issues.

1) Slight Overheating Problem
-car will start to overheat slightly at idle, i replaced the thermostat with no luck. However, when looking into the coolant resivoir, the car doesnt seem to be sucking the coolant through the system....im hoping its not the water pump and im slightly doubtful because im not losing coolant or overheating too terrible, I can drive it fine it just runs a little hot.

2) The car only starts in neutral
-Im wondering if this could be the neutral safety switch? I have no reverse lights either soooo thats my theory but advice is welcome.

3) Tranny redlines between 3rd and 4th under hard acceleration
-Under easy/normal driving its fine but under hard acceleration it will sometimes bounce off the limiter or get stuck until i ease off the throttle.

4) Slightly higher idle in Park and Neutral
- Perfect in drive and reverse

Any advice is appreciated, im just happy to own an m104 coupe

I too have a 94 E320 coupe and I'll try to answer based on that.

My car sits at about 83 degrees under normal driving conditions. It does however heat fairly quickly if stuck in traffic in hot weather. It will cool down just as quickly once the car starts moving. If it gets to 105 degrees the 2 electric fans kick in and cools quickly.

Agree that the neural safety switch needs replacement.

My car exhibits none of the redline issues you specify. Sounds like the dial is a bit dodgy.

Slightly higher idle revs in park and neutral is natural, no idling torque converter sucking a few revs.
