Need advice on purchasing a W124

I'm looking for a 89 - 93 300E. I'm forced to sell my current car b/c of insurance reasons, and I need to buy something before Dec. 5th as a temp. car to use for about a year until my premiums go down. I have a couple questions about 300E's.

Was the 24V 3.0L engine ever in the sedan, and if so for which model years & models?

What should I be looking out for when looking at a 300E - are there any areas that generally tend to be troublesome?

Which model year did they replace the M103 with the M104 engine?

Does anyone have a list of updates that 300E's received b/w '89 and '93?

Thnx

I would suggest you look for a 93 with the 104 engine. Theyv are out there. (94 would be better...nicer grill/lights). If you get a 104 engine make sure the head gasket and wiring harness have been replaced.
Good luck

Another thing to be on the lookout for is the A/C evaporator. They are known to leak and replacing them is very expensive (the whole dash and center console have to be removed). If there is a slow leak, you're better off leaving it be and re-charging the system when it gets low. For the sake of the environment, you might want to convert to R-134a.

The timing chain will last a long time with good engine oil. I got 228K miles out of mine before I decided to have it replaced. However, the replacement interval is 100K.

1. No, just the coupe for the U.S. Market
2. 1993 (in the sedan); 1990 for the coupe

Also replace the OVP (over-voltage protection) relay with the updated part... relatively-simple, compared to the head gasket.

For a higher-mileage motor I'd check for timing chain service as well.

Somewhat off-tangent, but does a W124 300E really cost less to insure than your current 1997 C280 ?
