How to Disable ASR?

Is there a easy and cheap way to disable the ASR on a 1992 400E? I know about the ASR defeat switch, but it cost almost $500 dollars. Any suggestions?

Unplug the speed sensors on each of the front shock towers...they look like large RCA cables. Your ASR lite will go on and it will be disabled.

You will lose ABS though...not a big deal IMO.

Where exactly are the speed sensors located on my 1995 S500? I can't get my ASR light to go off. You mentioned the front shock towers. Would I access them under the hood or under the car? I need more direction. Thanks.

You have to remove the front wheels. The cables are seated in clips on the shock towers. It terminates at a connector at the wheel hub.

ASR is Acceleration Slip Regulation, and prevents the rear wheels from slipping when accelerating.

The 2nd gear start can be changed by installing the modified valve body available from BergWerks. You can also put the selector in 2nd, then back to D for a 1st gear start.

How much do they run and is it hard to install? Also what was mercedes reasoning for making the cars start in 2nd gear? Why didn't they just make 2nd gear 1st gear and have an OD?
