Looking at a 1989 300TE with high miles...
Hi there,
As the title states i'm looking at a 1990 300TE with rather high KMS but the price is very reasonable and I feel if I pass this beauty up ill be kicking myself later.
The car has done 470,000kms and as far as i can tell, the transmission changes nicely, doesn't blow any smoke and starts well. The asking price is $1,500 however i'm sure I can get it for $1,200 as he is eager to sell. The W124 Estate was a pretty rare vehicle in Australia, so they don't come up that often.
The seller states that it has had a new fuel filter and tie rod ends. A replacement alternator and tyres were fitted approximately 9 months ago.
However, i'm always cautious in buying an old car with such high kms.
EDIT: Just spoke to the seller and apparently yesterday the belt snapped and took out the idler pulley bolt completely off, does this sound like something that could be easily replaced?
Does anybody have any information they can share with me in regards to buying a car with such high miles?
What do you guys think?

Out Of Control!!
I would say that the belt incident is just the start things to come---no doubt with loads of time and tools you can dig the broken part of the bolt from the block!!
However on balance, we all have different levels of pain we will endure---who can say what yours is!!

95' E320 Wagon (gave to father) 15' VW TDI Wagon, 05' X3, 97' F150, 99' Buell S3
Those engines are rock solid. Regular head gasket and valve seal jobs are normal every 140K miles. Water pump every 100K miles. Belt 40K miles. Lot's of rubber bits, hoses etc. to deal with. Radiator 100K miles. Rear suspension leveling will need attention every 200K miles. My father has close to 300K miles on his 91' 300TE. (Was mine before he got it) So I speak from experience.
