Car Doesn't Start in "P" - No Reverse Lamps

My car does not start in Park, only in Neutral and the reverse lamps do not come on. Are these problems related? Are they both related to the so-called neutral safety switch?

Now, how much is it to fix this... Is it a simple problem, or do I require a whole new part?

Thanks!

I have this same problem on my '86 and it's described in other threads. From what I remember, it's probably a failed transmission switch which costs <$100 and requires replacing it from under the car.

Yep, sounds like a neutral safety switch to me. I replaced mine in my garage, took me about 30 minutes. What really helped was the pictures in the MB manual, they made it much easier to visualize loosening and tightening the lock ring that holds this dealie in place.
