What will replace the 124s?

I've been looking at a few new cars...I do this from time to time thinking it would be nice to have a new car. Brand new everything. But I'm not willing to spend the money to buy a new MB anything. Plus I hate check engine lights and automated gizmos, it seems like that crap is always failing. So I looked at a new Maxima, new accord, new Jetta, new GTI. But every time I leave the dealer in my 124 it simply puts those cars to shame with regard to build quality, solid feel and just the way it drives. I've only got 240K on the D and it just continues to satisfy.

SO, I'm buying a modified E420 from my MB mechanic as a second car instead of replacing my E300D. But eventually, like all good things, these will wear out and need to be replaced...but with what? So far I haven't found anything that didn't feel like a step down. I've had 2 210 cars, a 320 wagon and an E430. Both were check light nightmares, blew bulbs, ate wiring, had climate control issues etc. I'm just wondering what others are replacing their 124s with and how it's working out.

If I had to pick something to replace the w124, I would pick a Lexus GS. Same comfort of ride, Toyota reliability and a fantastic interior quality. Other vehicles I'd consider.. Infiniti M37x, or if you wanted to go a few years older (when things were simpler..) the q45.

We have a Toyota Sequoia so the reliability is no question for me on the GS. They just don't feel as substantial as the Benz. German cars just have a solid road feel that I haven't been able to find in any of the Japanese cars.
