It depends!
It is possible to use a speaker-level adaptor to connect your aftermarket head unit to the factory amp. I do not have a part number or manufacturer but have done it and seen it done by others in the past. The real rub for me on this one is that I am a musician, albeit amatuer, but since I was six or so I have played many instruments. What you get when you connect several high power amps in line is a lot of noise and not much music.
If you decide to replace the factory amp, then you have the speaker issue. The speakers in many 124s are 2ohm units, which means your amp needs to be 2ohm stable or you will cook it. Except for the cars with the Bose systems, every MB I have owned has had its head unit, speakers and amp replaced.
