Squealing Brakes

I recently had my brakes replaced on my W124. THey squeal so bad that it attacts other drivers. Also, sometimes, the brakes sometimes do not grip at very slow speeds i.e<5mph. Any ideas?

My mechanic took the pads off and had them scrubbed with sandpaper. Still does not help. BTW - this is intermittent - but more on the frequent side.

Thanks.

My experience is that not the pads are making the noise, but the assembl itself. Whenever I swap the pads I apply (after thouroughly cleaning) a thin layer of copper grease to the areas where the pistons touch the pads and the seat of the pads in the frame. Maybe this helps in your case too.

Ditto to bamberger's reply. MB makes an antisqueal paste that is basically a copper-based antisieze compound, identical to the Permatex brand commonly available.

Don't know about your low speed gripping problem. It may be the different character of the new pads.

The low grip thing at low speed can be caused by a dirty or damaged speed sensor of the ABS system. It may see wrong readings and apply the ABS (stuttering) braking. You can measure the resitances of the sensors. The values are available in the shop manual.
