e320 vs e420 and e220
Hi,
I my have to part with my 320CE but I am thinking
about getting another w124 4door version(its a problem
having a large family ).
I can get a 1995 E220, and a E420. Since the gas prize in Iceland is among the highes in europe ( I think only Holland is higher ) I do think about milage. I am getting about 13,5 - 14.5ltr/100km on my 320.
What is the avarage milage of a 420 and is the 220 underpowered? Should I focus on a 320 since I like the
power of my 320CE.
regards,
Siggi

Here in the states the E420 gets only around a mile or two worse per gallon than the E320. I would say get the E420 over the E320 but as far as the E220 goes, I would only get that if it gets far better mileage than the other models because it will be slow.

Thanks ZeroNero,
I am a bit afraid of the 220 because I think I will not like
after driving my 320. This will be a really hard decision?
Have you ever had the chance of driving a 320 or 300 and
compare it to your car?

I've driven both the M103 (12 valve) and M104 (24 valve) 300's. The M103 engine I do not like at all. To me it's just to out dated, doesn't have nearly enough power, and seems to have problems. I like the M104 engine. Around town it has the same response as the M119 (V8) since it has different gearing. On the highway though, the M119 sets itself apart. Since your decision will be between the M104 and M119 it will be hard. I would test drive the E420 on the highway and then make your decision.
I have never driven a E220 since they don't have those here, but we do have the C220 and even that car is slow. So I would think the E220 would have to be slower since it's a larger car.

My dad had a 230E 5-speed manual. It was a nice car, but it was seriously underpowered. In the city it was quite a slug. It needed more revs to keep up with the faster cars. However, in Jakarta, most cars are much slower than the 230E
The 5MT helped though. My mom previously drove a W123 280E and she made a comment that the 280E needed less throttle to move. (Both have 5speed MT)
My friend had a 200E Automatic in Singapore. That car was pretty zippy in town (8-valve 2.0 I4) because it was geared differently to the 230E somehow.
We decided to sell the 230E because it was becoming unreliable and its AC barely worked. My dad did not miss it one bit. When he drove the E420 he realized that he should've looked for the 6-cylinder 124s
that's my take hehe. Diesels are different though.

What I wonder is the gas milage you get from the 320 CE. I would expect, and this is in line with my experiences, you should get betwenn 10-12 liter/100km. IF YOU DONT RACE THE CAR.
If you like the performance of the 320, forget the 220!!!! Due to the lack of performance the gas milage wont be any better as the inline 6 (E320)

well I really donīt know what I will do except I will probably
sell the CE. However I do like the power of the car so I donīt
know if I can ever return to a 4banger. My other car is a Huyndai
Sonata with a 4cyl 2000 engine and I did not have any problems
with it until I got my Merc. I have to think things over carefully.
