oil consumption maladies

i recently purchased a 1990 260E that seems to have an affinity for oil. i have checked and can see no obvious signs of leaking from the main seals or the head. there is no oil/ froth in my coolant, so im guessing that the car is eating it up somehow.

ive heard mention of the valve stem seals here and there. could someone give me an idea of how much that should cost me to get done. thanks

If valve stems are gone (which I dought, since the material has been improved starting with the '90 models) you can check by pulling the spark plugs and check them for greasy looks. If they look clean the oil just burns in the engine. What is the comsumption anyway? 1- 1.5 quart per 1000 km (600 miles) is still within the design limits. I have two of those 260E and both need some oil. But nothing which needs fixing, since the cost are way higher then the extra oil. Valve stem seals are not very expensive (my guess $300-$500)
