V8 5L M119 - what should I look out for?

Hi guys, I am keen on getting any MB that has this engine in it. My wish list is actually a W124 E500 -1994, but I have read that these are somewhat rare and hard to find. Especially since I am in Australia. I think my only best chance is to look for one in the UK (RHD version).

Can anyone else here recommend another chassis that came with this engine that is somewhat around the $10k price range?

Also what are the common problems with these engines (from wear and age)?

The M119 motor also came in the 500SL, 500SEL and 500E.

If you buy one its a good idea to see if the wiring harness has been replaced as they were made from biodegradable material which turned out to be a bad idea for obvious reasons.

You can find a host of detailed info about what else one might look for when purchasing an M119 motor (specifically 500E but applies to all models) at 500eboard.com

This is a motor worth owning.

Good Luck.

AMGTestDriverNJ, thank you for the tips.

I have heard of those harnesses made from biodegradable material. I thought they were in the more recently made models. I didn't know they had them back then.

I'll have a look at that board.

Do you know of any aftermarket parts for this motor? Like Camshafts, valve train upgrades etc?

thanks

Also 1992-1993 400E and 1994-1995 E420 at least in the States. Look for worn engine mounts, leaking water pump, leaking power steering hoses, leaking engine breather hoses (intake), both engine harnesses ecu to injectors and starter alternator oil pressure sensors), knock sensor harness, fan clutch. That's a lot but not enough to turn away. Are you handy with tools, have access to OEM parts, and determined?

I had all if those things and more (worn reverse discs, front pump seal, vacuum line leaks, flex discs...) And still won't give it up. My 92 400E is a pleasure to revive and to drive.

Unfortunately there isn't much out there that's worth it. A 92 LH module will net you about 7hp extra over the 93-95 MY 500 motors just due to its mapping/programming. Best bang for your buck as you can find them on eBay and some of these forums classified sections. There is a member @ 500Eboard.com who is attempting to extract some extra power from port and polishing the intake manifold so we'll see how that turns out. Otherwise, I'd just enjoy it as-is.
