Unhappy 1988 300E Transmission Problem ?

I am new to the forum and have been looking at the posted discussions and think it a great resource for info/help.

I just purchased a 1988 300E with AUTO transmission.

It has been driving great.

The other day I exited from the highway and was driving through my town when all of a sudden the car seemed to slip into a different gear and the RPM gauge went very high.

As I continued to drive it seemed to settle back down then went high again.

Now it seems that it will not automatically shift up and the RPM go high as I drive approx. 35-40mph

Is this an indication of some serious transmission problems ? Or can be something less severe ??

On another note:

My SRS light appears to stay on as well but I am told that I may need to replace the contact rings and brushes to resolve this issue.

Does anybody have any idea what may be going on with transmission ??

HELP !

It sounds like you need to have the trans looked at.

Here is an address which may have some helpful folks for your 88, http://www.mbnz.org/index.htm
The forum there has alot of owners who know the in's and out's of your car year and model.

There is an adjustment that can be done for that trans which may be the issue. It could also be filter or screen. However if you are not handy with this stuff then a MB tech at a garage near you would be the best bet.

Good luck and enjoy the drive!

´88 trans

You just bought the car, right?

What´s the mileage on it? I guess pretty high if you are told to change the contacts on the SRS system.

Probably it would help just to clean the trans - new oil and filter.
Be sure to drain the torque converter and the oil cooler, too.

Sounds a bit like a sticky valve or something.

1988 300E Transmission Problem ?

Thanks for the replies.

I just bought the car.

The mileage is approx. 190,000mi.

The SRS light is on and when I first searched the WEB I found that the SRS light is sort of a common problem - with changing the contact rings and brushes as a possible fix.

This morning the transmission seemed to work as normal after a cold-start but a few minutes later it reverted back to "not-shifting - high RPM)

I will be taking it to the shop this afternoon.

190,000 miles on a mercedes transmission means it needs to be overhauled or replaced. Mercedes offers a remanufactured transmission with a 2 year 24,000 mile warranty. The price is usually around 2300.00 installed. An overhaul will cost approx. 1800.00 from a dealer & have a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty. Dont be fooled by fly-by-night repair shops. I have seen some butchers rebuild a transmission that eventually had to be replaced due to non working conditions. I rebuilt my 87 300e for about 350.00 in parts. Good luck!
