Question Shift knob removal

What is the least resistance method for removing an original shift knob from an 300E automatic 1990?

I have tried to turn counterclockwise and pull straight up, but have got no response. The next thing to try is a saw...

The orginal looks worn out after 12 years and I just bought a new wooden replacement.

Shift knob

1st you have to remove the shifter wood, then the bolts that hold the shifter mechanism to the center console. That will give you access to the 15 mm nut on the shifter turn it counter clockwise 1 turn then turn the shifter counterclockwise to remove it. Let me know if I have misled you in any way.

Hmmm.... the task is probably simpler than that. I'd just want to remove the black plastic knob on top of the shifter.

Something like the 2nd picture on this page: http://www.i-club.com/mods/WRX_shifte_installation.htm
On Subaru you can just unscrew it...

I believe the shift know is glued onto the post.

A buddy of mine simply cut off the plastic knob, and glued on the new one with epoxy.

It worked.

The correct way is to really remove the center console wood, remove the post and knob as explained above, and install the new one with the metal post.

I know this is a rather old post, however I have removed the wood console, but I am stuck trying to remove the gear surround to in stall the burlwood shifter for my 93 coupe. Has anyone done this recently and if so, any help/advice? BTW, I see three bolts on the base of the shifter - I am hoping those don't have to come out, just for the fear that I can't get them back in. I also see one bolt on the right rear of the plastic gear shifter, other than that - I am stuck how to remove it - I am doubting I can get a pair of needlenose in there to move the nut.

hmmm, my faceplate does not come off, or at least I dont think it does (mabye because it is a 10 yr car doesn't help either). Also, I didn't see/feel and grooves where it would. Is the faceplate thick (I am refrerring to the surrounding parts) or less than a cm in thickness. Guess I'll be back playing with it this morning.

Thanks for your help

Take it in and have someone else put the shifter on for you. Mine cost me $15 to have it done correctly....that's a lot cheaper than breaking something or stripping the nut with your needle-nose pliers.
